Washington, D.C. – Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia Democrat, issued the following statement today regarding Speaker of the House John Boehner’s recent comments expressing ambivalence regarding a loss of federal jobs stemming from drastic budget cuts.
“The Speaker’s ambivalence toward the federal workers we will lose if these over-the-top budget cuts are enacted makes it clear that job creation is not the new majority’s top priority. The fact is that while the number of private sector jobs has been increasing over the past year, our total job creation has been hampered by net job losses in the public sector, particularly at the state and local level.
“The Speaker is ignoring the fact that putting more federal employees out of work will be a significant drag on our economy. If you don’t have a job, you won’t take your family out to dinner, buy a car when your old one breaks down, or engage in the various activities that aid in our nation’s economic recovery. This will negatively impact our small businesses and the economy at large, ultimately impeding private sector job growth.
“The Republican’s drastic cuts being debated on the House floor this week fail to invest in our country’s future and, as the Speaker openly acknowledges, will result in putting more people out of work.”
