On March 17, the Department of Defense released its annual report on sexual assault in the military. There was an 11% increase in the number of assaults reported by service members, possibly indicating that more victims are feelings comfortable enough to come forward. The report pointed out that only 20% of service members who are victims of sexual assault ever report the incident.
In 2009, the Army reported the largest number of sexual assaults, up 13%; the Navy was up 21%; and the Air Force reported a 29% decrease in reported sexual assaults.
