On Wednesday, VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki visited the Mursfreesboro VA hospital in Tennessee where nearly 6,500 veterans could have been infected with Hepatitis or HIV. The hospital used dirty colonoscopy equipment which was reported to the VA a few years ago by a doctor and nurse.
Says Shinseki, “This is a systemic issue, not a case of an individual not doing what was expected. We had a full investigation. We learned a lot. We put procedures in place.”
Of the 6,500 vets who wre exposed, 32 tested positive for Hepatitis or HIV.
VA hospitals in Augusta, GA and Miami, FL also were found to have used dirty equipment. In total, 11,000 military veterans were exposed.
