Veterans of the first Gulf War may receive better health care and compensation in the near future. At the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, a plan is underway to improve programs for these veterans that includes:
- Better training for clinicians and claims processors;
- A closer examination of the physical and emotional effects of the Gulf War’s environmental hazards on service members.
“Reaching out to Gulf War Veterans is not only essential to our transformation of VA, for many of us it is also personal,” said John R. Gingrich, VA chief of staff. “Having commanded troops in the Gulf War, and then knowing that some of these brave men and women have fallen to mysterious illnesses has been both a frustrating and saddening experience.
