According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ most recent data, in 2008 there were 3,696,100 recorded cases of non-fatal injuries and illnesses in private industry. This figure is down 305,900 cases from 2007. Of course, employment is down from 2007 as well.
Of the 3,696,100 recorded cases, 1,078,100 involved employees who needed to take time from work. 222,290 of these injuries and illnesses involved back injuries including injuries to the spine and spinal cord.
